Parent and Family Members,
Yesterday, as many of you are aware our Georgia Southern Family experienced an unexpected tragedy and loss due to an automobile accident. No words can begin to express the undeniable shock and heartache that has engulfed our campus at this time. The sting and grief that accompanies this situation reaches well beyond the campus to the greater “Eagle Nation Family” and its supporters. Our University President Dr. Brooks Keel shared with us yesterday (Wednesday, April 22, 2015):
"It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of a tragedy that took place this morning. Several Georgia Southern students died and two were injured in an early morning crash on I-16 eastbound near Savannah.
Every one of our students contributes in no small measure, to the Eagle Nation. The loss of any student, especially in a tragic way, is particularly painful. Losing five students is almost incomprehensible.
Our hearts go out to the families, friends and classmates of these students.
The University flag will fly at half-staff Thursday in their memory. Memorial arrangements are pending.
Let me urge those particularly touched by this tragedy to avail themselves of counseling services, and I urge all members of the University community to support each other during this time.
Members of the University community may obtain support services from the Counseling Center at 912- 478-5541."
Dr. Keel’s remarks reflect the genuine attitude that we must all emulate in order to cope with this unfathomable event. In our sorrow we must reach out to those who have been effected the most, especially the families of these young women. We must all strive to be there for one another in order to and carry on and honor the memory of those that were lost.
The leadership of the Student Nurses' Association, Kappa Delta Sorority, Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority invite the Georgia Southern community to join them as they remember the lives of the Georgia Southern students lost. A memorial will be held this evening (Thursday, April 23) at 7 p.m. on Sweetheart Circle. All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend.
I ask you to remember and comfort all those who mourn and grieve. I also ask you to give thanks for the blessings, joy and smiles that perpetuate the memory of those who we have lost.
